Dr. David Smith Elected President-Elect of The American Association of Tissue Banks’ Board of Governors

Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services (CBC/CTS) is pleased to announce David M. Smith, M.D. was recently elected President-Elect of the American Association of Tissue Banks.  He will serve as President from September 2011 – September 2013.

The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) -- a professional, non-profit, scientific and educational organization -- is the only national tissue banking organization in the United States. Founded in 1976, the AATB is dedicated to improving and saving lives by promoting and advancing the safety, quality and availability of donated human tissue. To fulfill that mission, the AATB publishes standards and accredits tissue banks, certifies personnel and operates a tissue network.

Dr. Smith, CEO of CBC/CTS, has worked at the organization for seven years.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, followed by a Medical Doctor’s degree from the Wright State University School of Medicine in 1983. Dr. Smith served his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Kettering Memorial Hospital in Dayton, followed by a fellowship in Forensic Pathology at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Toxicology and Criminalistics in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as Forensic Pathology.  He is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Wright State University.
 
Dr. Smith is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology with the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.  He has served on the Board of Governors of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and is a past chair of the Physician Council.  He is also a member of America’s Blood Centers and AABB.  Locally, he serves as a member of the National Advisory Board for Wright State University’s College of Science and Mathematics, and the Ohio Association of Blood Banks.

Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services, an independent, not-for-profit organization, is ISO 9001:2000 registered.  Community Blood Center is the sole provider of blood components to the twenty-four hospitals in its fifteen county service area. Community Tissue Services serves the public through recovery, processing and distribution of human tissue donations used for transplantation.
