COMMUNITY TISSUE SERVICES DONATES SKIN FOR
BURN VICTIMS OF MEXICAN DAY CARE FIRE

Community Tissue Services (CTS) recently donated skin grafts to help aid victims of the day care fire in Hermosillo, Mexico.  A number of severely burned children were taken to burn centers throughout the United States for treatment.  The donated skin was sent to Shriners Children Hospital in Sacramento, California, and CTS is currently in contact with hospitals in Mexico to offer additional assistance if needed.

“As one of the largest nonprofit providers of life-saving skin grafts, it is important for our organization to be able to respond to requests for assistance when tragedy strikes in the United States or in other countries,” said David Smith, M.D., CEO of Community Tissue Services.  At CTS, our mission is to save and enhance lives.  Through the generosity of tissue donors, CTS is able to provide tissue grafts to patients in need of a lifesaving or life-enhancing transplant.

Skin grafts are used to treat burn victims and serve as a temporary covering to reduce pain, lower the chance of infection and prevent dehydration.  Skin grafts can mean the difference between life and death.

CTS, an accredited member of the American Association of Tissue Banks, is one of the largest tissue banks in the United States. In 2008, the not-for-profit tissue bank distributed more than 124,000 tissue grafts to over 2000 hospitals, physicians and surgeons.

Community Tissue Services serves the public through recovery, processing and distribution of human tissue donations used for transplantation. Community Tissue Services is composed of eight regional offices and two satellite offices:  Dayton, Ohio (Corporate Office); Fort Worth, Texas; Fresno, California; Indianapolis, Indiana; Memphis, Tennessee; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; and Toledo, Ohio.  Satellite locations:  Boise, Idaho, and Medford, Oregon.  For more information about Community Tissue Services, visit www.communitytissue.org.
